Atlanta – Architecture & Landmarks

Atlanta’s architecture include influence by classical, modernist and post-modernist styles. As the city was completely destroyed by fire in the 1800’s, there are no traces of the original architecture which had been built in Antebellum style. Many of Atlanta’s modern day development has also resulted in the destruction of older historic buildings, with many iconic structures including the city’s first skyscraper and the Classical Carnegie Library being demolished to make room for newer and modern buildings.

Atlanta is home to various landmarks that call back to its many roles in historical settings. The Atlanta History Center located in the Buckhead district includes various building such as the Smith Farmhouse and the Swan House which are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The center also houses one of the largest collections of American Civil War artefacts. In fact, the entire Buckhead neighborhood is famous for its development as a commercial and residential district of Atalanta, anchored by modern high rise buildings, hotels, restaurants, shops and more.

While many of Atlanta’s oldest buildings have been lost to history, some notable locations have been repurposed to allow them to live on in and serve modern uses. Examples of these include the Ponce City Market, Old Fourth Ward and the Krog Street Market. Modern notable architecture includes those focused around the arts, with the High Museum being one of the city’s most famous art centers. The city of Atlanta also has its own Flatiron Building, one which was actually constructed five years prior to the famous Flatiron Building in New York City.
