Caracas is home to many quality museums. The majority of these focus on Venezuelan independence, history, and its colonial period. Additionally, visitors will find many modern museums dedicated to art, technology, and science. Some of Latin Americas most well-known museums are located in Caracas, including the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Caracas which focuses on modern art from the likes of Picasso, Botero, and more. In addition, visitors can find many open-air art displays and exhibits along the Boulevard and Sabana Grande.
Museo Casa John Boulton
Considered by many to be one of the city’s ‘hidden gems’, the House of John Boulton Museum is located next to the Panteon Nacional. The result of a private collection by the Boulton family, this museum includes many historical documents from Venezuela’s colonial period. Also on display are various pieces of statues from the city’s past that were either dismantled or destroyed, such as El Saludante and El Manganzón. One section of the house entitled the “Bolivarian Collection Room” is dedicated to many of the personal effects of political leader Simón Bolívar including portraits, furniture, pottery, and more.

Museo Bolivariano
Located adjacent to the birthplace of Simón Bolívar, the Bolivarian Museum is dedicated to the political leader and includes personal effects, artwork, and other artifacts related to the leader as well as his fight for independence from Spain. Most of the items located in the museum were collected during the 19th century, with some of the earliest placed on display in 1883. The current building was inaugurated in 1960. Some of the museums’ most interesting objects include flags used during the War of Independence, a spear used by José Antonio Páez, and various coats of arms from Venezuela’s most influential families.

Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Caracas
The Caracas Museum of Contemporary art is one of the finest collections of modern art in all South America. Opened in 1974, it houses more than 5,000 pieces of art by the likes of Pablo Picasso, Andy Warhol, and more. The museum is famously the first to offer a specialist art library, as well as an education department for the blind. Offering free admission to visitors, the four levels are divided into exhibition rooms, each with its own collection themes. Visitors can also visit the onsite library that contains more than 13,000 books, 12,000 slides, and 400 video titles. Many works of art from prominent Venezuelan artists are also on display.
