Lima (and Peru at large) has had the misfortune of suffering a range of disasters from wars, earthquakes and more. As a result, some of the oldest developments in and around the city have been lost. This makes what does exist within the city even more interesting, with many of the Lima’s oldest colonial structures including various historical landmarks, churches, and houses still standing today. Much of Lima’s existing historical buildings stem from the directive by Spain, of which much of the city was modeled after. This includes the city center, which was specifically modeled after the Spanish city of Seville.
Many of Lima’s colonial structures are both mansions and cathedrals or other landmarks of religious importance. The Convento de San Francisco is built in baroque architectural style and is a World Heritage Site. Located in the historic center of Lima, the original structure was built in 1535. Although severely damaged by an earthquake in 1655, a repair period which would last until 1729 would help to bring the structure back to its former glory. Another unique site in the city includes the Iglesia Las Nazarenas – a sanctuary and monastery opened in 1771 and built in Rococo style.
Santo Domingo is one of the largest basilicas in Lima and was built in the Rococo style. Founded in the 1530s, the building opened in 1766. It is home to the first Peruvian university, as well as the oldest university in the Americas, having begun its functions in the 16th century. Like so many of Lima’s landmarks, it was largely destroyed during an earthquake that occurred in 1940. The venue houses the Tomb of Santa Rosa de Lima as well as various religious buildings in its immediate surroundings.
