Lima – Immigration

Visitors to Peru will find that the country offers a wide range of visa-free travel for inbound tourists. Many countries are eligible to travel to Peru for a period of up to 183 days without a visa. For some countries, this extends to business visas as well (although that list is considerably shorter). Any visitors planning to stay 183 or less in Peru will be given a temporary visa, while those seeking to extend their stay longer than this period will be given residence visas.

For visitors that require a travel visa in advance, various documents are required, including:

  • Valid passport for at least 6 months (including copies of the front and back sides)
  • Two copies of the visa application form
  • Cover letter that explains the trip to Peru (purpose and itinerary)
  • Return flight tickets
  • Proof of accommodation in Peru
  • Proof of sufficient funds
  • In some cases, a personal income tax return may be requested
  • Letter of guarantee (if the trip is sponsored by another person or organization)

Generally, visas take up to 30 days for processing and approval.

Additional visas are available for those looking to visit, including:

  • Artist visas (available extensions up to 30 days)
  • Student visas (available extensions up to 1 year)
  • Religious visas (available extensions up to 1 year)
  • Crewmen visas (available extensions up to 15 days)

For those looking to invest in Peru, visas are available if an investment of at least 500,000 Soles is made into an existing Peruvian listed company or part of the setup of a new independent company in the country. These visas, upon approval, are valid for one year. Ongoing extensions to the visa can be made assuming the company is still in business, and it maintains at least 5 employees. As part of the investment visa, immediate family members are eligible to reside in Peru as well.

For any investor who resides in Peru for a period of two years, they will become eligible for Peruvian citizenship. Citizenship requires proof of ties to the country (i.e. purchased property) as well as showcasing your knowledge of the Spanish language capabilities. Permanent residency is often pursued in lieu of citizenship, available after three years of legally residing in Peru and allowing you to stay and work in the country indefinitely.
