Visitors to Machu Picchu will note that due to its status as a protected historical site, various fees, permits and restrictions will apply.
All visitors to the site will need to purchase a ticket to the park at the entrance. There is a set price for foreign visitors of s/152, however, discounts are available for children and students that have an ISIC card.
Due to the large volumes of tourists, the park has instituted a pass system that requires visitors to confirm their entry time. This ensures a limit to the number of people arriving at any given time and requires visitors to wait for their passes set time in order to be valid and allow park admission. These are set by the hour beginning at 6am through to 2pm, daily.
For those visitors headed to Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain, there are additional fees outside of the main Machu Picchu admission ticket. These include:
Cerro Machu Picchu: + s/200
Huayna Picchu: + s/200
As is the case with the park, tickets for entry to these climbing routes are given specific times for validation of entry. Visitors will not be permitted to enter prior to their given time.
Tickets are available to purchase online at the official government website. There is a limit of up to 2,500 visitors each day, with high season causing tickets to sell out quickly. Climbing mountain permits are even more restricted with only 400 permitted each day to each of the mountains.
Visitors should note that food and drink are not permitted inside the park. A passport is required to purchase tickets and for admission to the climbing areas. Luggage storage is available; however small packs are permitted.
