Uruguay offers visa-free travel to some select passport holders, generally allowing a maximum stay of 90 days for visitation and tourism. However, most foreign visitors from outside of the America’s will require a travel visa in advance. For those requiring a pre-approved visa, several documents are required including:
- Completed visa application form
- Recent passport-sized photograph
- Passport that is valid for 6 months from the date of departure from Uruguay
- Photocopy of the passport’s main page
Business visas are available for those looking to travel for business-related purposes into the country. These visas are valid for a period of 90 days and require additional documents for approval, including:
- Letter of invitation from the company or body in Uruguay inviting you
- Photocopy of the reference signatory’s identity card
- Letter from the company you work for authorizing the travel
- Photocopy of your passport / ID card
- Travel tickets and hotel reservation details
- Medical certificate
Uruguay offers additional visas, including for students, family reunions, conventions and events. Depending on the visa type and the country of your passport, you may be required to attend a visa interview at the local Uruguayan embassy.
Uruguay is considered one of the easiest countries in South America to obtain a visa and ultimately citizenship. ‘Independent Means’ visas are offered to anyone who can simply prove they have an income of at least USD $1,500 per month. With this visa type, it is possible to obtain citizenship in as little as 3 years (via marriage) or 5 years (for singles).
