Philadelphia’s architecture is a combination of styles reminiscent of its past history but also highlighting its modernization. The majority of architecture used by older buildings in the city showcases both Georgian and Federal styles of design. The first half of the 19th century saw a Greek revival style influence many of the buildings, while the second half saw more design in Victorian architectural stylings.
Modern Philadelphia includes a combination of both steel and concrete as well as glass and granite skyscrapers. The tallest building in the city, the Comcast Center, stands 58 floors tall. Many of the city’s older neighborhoods contain row houses, whose concept was first introduced to the United States in Philadelphia in the 17th century. Visitors can also find examples of Postmodern architectural style throughout the city including at Robert Venturi’s Guild House.
The city of Philadelphia is home to various landmarks from different historical time periods. One of the most notable is the Liberty Bell, an iconic symbol of American independence. Another famous landmark is that of Fort Mifflin, a fort rebuilt in 1794 that offers various educational programs and events year round. Visitors should also see Carpenter’s Hall, the official birthplace of Pennsylvania located in the Independence National Historical Park.
