Ecuador offers visa-free travel for tourists from most countries around the world, including the USA and China. For those allowed visa-free admission, a stay of up to 90 days is allowed. Any stay longer than 90 days requires a temporary residence application or approval of an extended visa. For those traveling visa-free, they must simply have on their person upon arrival:
- Passport valid for at least 6 months from date of entry
- Round-trip or onward trip ticket
- Travel insurance that covers your health for the duration of your stay
For those that do require a visa prior to arrival in Ecuador, the following are required as part of the application process:
- Passport that will be valid for at least 6 months from the date you plan to arrive in Ecuador
- Passport photo (2 inch x 2 inch)
- Proof of necessary financial means to fund your stay in Ecuador
- Certificate of criminal records from your home country
- Proof of travel insurance that covers your health for the duration of your stay
These requirements are for a tourist visa only. Those requesting a business visa who require pre-approval must also include:
- Letter of invitation from the inviting company in Ecuador
Visitors who are seeking to stay in Ecuador for a period of more than 90 days can apply in advance in their home country at the Ecuadorian embassy. Periods of up to 180 days can be granted. Visa extensions can also be applied for once in Ecuador at the Coordinaciones Zonales. These extended visas will only be provided once each five-year period.
Ecuador offers three visa types, including:
- Tourist visa
- Temporary Resident visa
- Permanent Resident visa
For those looking to invest in Ecuador, the country offers Temporary and Permanent resident options. This simply requires a minimum investment into the country of USD 42,500 via a Certificate of Deposit (CD). It should be noted that property investments are included in this visa structure. Business investment is also allowed; however the amount required varies based on the industry of which the foreigner decides to invest in.
