Rio de Janeiro is a blend of historical and more modern architecture. Known well for its featuring of art deco styles, the city is home to some neighborhoods that each boast their own unique styles. Visitors to the city may wish to explore the many churches that the city has to offer, including the Metropolitan Cathedral of Saint Sebastian. Developed in gothic style, the church also offers many stained-glass windows. During the modernization of the city, various structures were developed to copy the successful development of the city of Paris. These locations are unique in that they have been developed in a Parisian style and include the Fundação Biblioteca Nacional and the Museu Nacional de Belas Artes.
The city is home to several palaces. The most interesting is Palácio Gustavo Capanema, built in 1932 by Oscar Niemeyer and Lucio Costa. Art deco is everywhere in the city, with one of the most famous pieces being that of Christ the Redeemer. The statue is listed as one of the new wonders of the world. Another unique location is that of Sugarloaf Mountain, a 396-meter hill that is popular for its beautiful views and is a staple of the cities bay skyline. The mountain is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
While all the city’s various neighborhood offer something special, the Ipanema neighborhood is especially popular. Developed in a grid-like fashion, the beach culture of this area is famous amongst surfers and skaters, with the neighborhood main roads closing each Sunday to allow room for pedestrian traffic. The area has always been a staple of Brazilian culture, with various art galleries and theaters scattered throughout. The neighborhood hosts its own Carnival festivities and was prominently featured in the popular bossa nova song “The Girl From Ipanema”.
