São Paulo – Museums

São Paulo is home to more than 110 unique museums, making it the largest concentration of cultural options in Latin America. Visitors will find museums that span across art, science, music and history across nearly every district of the city. In addition to housing thousands of unique artifacts, many of the city’s museums are famous for their construction and design architecture and have become famous visual landmarks in their own right.

 


 

Ipiranga Museum

Also known as the Museu Paulista and located at the University of São Paulo, this museum focuses on the history of Brazil and contains the country’s largest collections of works related to the Brazilian Empire. This includes various pieces of furniture, as well as documents and other historically relevant exhibits. Established in 1890, the museum’s most famous exhibit is the 1888 painting Independência ou Morte by Pedro Américo. In addition to the large exhibits, the museum offers educational programs, academic courses and is a center for scientific research. The museum was closed in 2013 with a grand reopening scheduled for 2022.

Museu de Arte Moderna de São Paulo (Museum of Modern Art of São Paulo)

Located in Ibirapuera Park, the Museum of Modern Art of São Paulo was built in 1948 and was modelled after the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. The museum was founded by Francisco Matarazzo Sobrinho and Yolanda Penteado and includes more than 4,000 unique works by various Brazilian and South American artists.

Museu de Arte de São Paulo (São Paulo Museum of Art)

Located on Paulista Avenue and referred to as MASP, the museum was established in 1947 and is considered a landmark in the city of São Paulo. MASP is internationally recognized as for its superior collection of European Art. Visitors can peruse exhibits that span across more than 8,000 pieces of Brazilian art, prints, drawings plus collections that span both Africa and Asia. Artifacts include various antiques, decorative pieces and more. The museum’s collection has been inducted into the Brazilian National Heritage list and also contains one of the largest libraries in all of Brazil.
