Toronto is a city full of museum options across a wide range of topics. Visitors can enjoy exhibits related to everything from art to agriculture, history, military, science and everything in between. Many museum locations are split amongst Toronto’s various districts, with a large concentration in or around the downtown Toronto area. Many of Canada’s largest and most famous museums are located within the city.


The Royal Ontario Museum

Dedicated to art, world culture and natural history, the Royal Ontario Museum is one of the largest museums in North America and the largest museum in Canada. Attracting more than one million visitors per year, it is the most-visited museum in all of Canada. Located in the University of Toronto district, the museum was established in 1912 and includes more than six million unique items on display. A total of 40 galleries are on exhibit, including collections of dinosaur bones and fossils, minerals, meteorites and more. Visitors can also see historical artefacts from Africa, Asia and various art collection including a focus on all things Art Deco.

Gardiner Museum

This interactive, hands-on museum focuses on various art forms. In addition to its many exhibits, it is well known for offering many hands-on art classes for visitors of all ages. Stoneware, pottery, botanicals and other art formats are taught here to the general public who can enroll in one of the many classes offered on-site. Offering both indoor and outdoor exhibit spaces, the museum also boasts outdoor dining options, wellness workshops, on-site performances and a variety of ever-changing pop-up exhibitions.

Museum of Contemporary Art

Founded in 1999, this museum previously located in a repurposed textile factory in the Design District of downtown Toronto. It was moved in 2018 to another historic building, the Tower Automotive Building, in the downtown area. Affiliated with the Canadian Museums Association, it was been the location of a previously delivered award, the MOCCA Award in Contemporary Art, to Edward Burtynsky in 2010. The 55,000 square foot facility houses work from over 1,000 Canadian and international artists. More than 80 permanent exhibits are on display, with other traveling exhibitions presented regularly from the United States, China, Taiwan, France, Germany and other European countries.

Universities

University of Toronto

Founded by a royal charter in 1827 as King’s College, the University of Toronto is a public research facility and is located adjacent to Queen’s Park. The university operates various campuses including eleven individual colleges under its umbrella. The school offers more than 700 undergraduate and 200 graduate programs and is consistently ranked among the top ten public universities in the world. Famously the university was the birthplace of insulin and stem cell research, as well as home of the first electron microscope. Alumni include several of Canada’s Prime Ministers, Governors, and several other world leaders.

George Brown College

Totalling three campuses in downtown Toronto, the George Brown College focuses on applied arts and technologies studies. Chartered in 1966, the school offers a total of 35 diploma programs and 31 advanced diploma programs. The school is also well known for its distance education program which includes participating students from more than 35 countries. George Brown College has consistently ranked the third best research university in Canada since 2014, with the school also being listed as one of Toronto’s top employers.
